A first-of-its-kind weekly price check of a healthy grocery basket for a family of four, at Aldi, Coles and Woolworths. Every Thursday we show the cost at each store, where each item is cheapest, and how much a family could save by splitting the shop.
$195.60 at the cheapest store for each item vs $247.09 paying the dearest price on every item. That's more than $2,000 a year.** Online prices 4 Nov 2026, 41 of 41 items.
No store was cheapest on everything: Aldi was cheapest on 24 items, Coles on 3, Woolworths on 7, and 7 were the same price at two or more stores.
For each item we take a week's amount for the family × the unit price at each store. Dearest price on every item: $247.09. Cheapest store for each item: $195.60. $247.09 − $195.60 = $51.49. $51.49 ÷ $247.09 = 21%. $51.49 × 52 = $2,677.48 (an illustration, not a forecast).

Edition 3 is here. The same healthy basket for a family of four, priced online at Aldi, Coles and Woolworths. No store was cheapest on everything: buying each item where it's cheapest came to $51.49 a week less than paying the dearest price on every item. I'll check again every Thursday.

The amounts: minimum daily serves from the Australian Dietary Guidelines (NHMRC, 2013), for one week. The foods: 41 everyday items from the Healthy Diets ASAP protocol, used by Australian researchers to cost healthy diets: vegetables (fresh, tinned and frozen), fruit, wholegrain and white bread, cereals, pasta and rice, meat, chicken, tuna, eggs and peanuts, milk, cheese and yoghurt, oils and spread.
Left out: bottled water and takeaway food. Hot BBQ chicken isn't sold online, so a raw whole chicken stands in.

Most price comparisons are monthly or quarterly, cover a handful of items, or leave out a store. The OikosAi Family Basket is the first of its kind: a weekly, healthy, family-sized basket across Aldi, Coles and Woolworths, showing the best split.
